Northeast State receives $1.5 million grant to expand aviation technology program

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — Northeast State Community College will receive a $1.5 million grant to continue preparing students for aviation careers.

The grant was awarded by the Appalachian Regional Commission. The money will expand the aviation maintenance program, provide space in a new hangar at the Tri-Cities Airport and help with certification.

The airport is also providing $500,000 in support of the project.

“We’re always looking to support workforce development in emerging areas where the job opportunities look to be extensive,” said Tim Thomas of the Appalachian Regional Commission. “Aviation maintenance technology and anything related to the aviation transportation sector is really a growing area now.

In three years, the project will serve eight businesses while training 72 community college students.
